Overview
Football in Australia is growing. Fast. In recent years, we have seen the Socceroos qualify for the World Cup (not once, but twice), the formation of a successful domestic competition, as well as Australia join the Asian confederation, and launch a bid to host the world’s biggest sporting tournament. Such has been the growth in the sport that qualification for the World Cup is no longer a distant hope; it’s expected. Perhaps the biggest indication of the rise of football in this country came in 2009 when Socceroos star Jason Culina returned home from Europe to play in the A-League – the first Australian international to do so in the prime of his career. In an exclusive interview in issue 14 of The Socceroo, Culina revealed his motives behind his move to the Gold Coast as the Australian game goes from strength to strength. The Socceroo is the match-day magazine for all Australia’s home internationals.
